Sonya records the sounds of your night so you can listen to them in the morning. The whole product is built on one rule: the sound does not leave your phone unless you send it yourself.

Who we are

Sonya is published by an individual developer. There is no account, no sign-in and no server that stores your nights.

What we process and where it lives

Night recordings - on device only

Audio is recorded in short chunks and stored only in the app's own folder on your iPhone.
Recordings are never uploaded. We operate no server that could receive them, and we cannot listen to your nights.
Files are excluded from iCloud backup: a month of nights weighs gigabytes and has no business leaving the device.
Files are stored with iOS data protection (NSFileProtectionCompleteUntilFirstUserAuthentication), so they stay encrypted while the device is powered off.
Sound leaves the phone only when you act: the episode list has Share the sound - the app cuts out the chosen episode and hands it to the system share sheet, and you choose where it goes. There is no other way out for audio.

Sound analysis - on the iPhone itself

Snoring, coughing, talking and other episodes are detected by the sound classifier built into iOS, running on your device.
No audio and no fragment of audio is sent anywhere for analysis.

Apple Health

If you turn the switch on in settings, the app writes one value to Health - “in bed”: the interval from the start of the night until recording stops.
Sleep stages are never written. The app hears sound and does not know which stage of sleep you were in; it will not invent one.
The app reads nothing from Health: no steps, no heart rate, no sleep records written by other apps.
The switch is off by default and permission is asked the first time you turn it on. You can revoke it in the Health app - writing simply stops and everything else keeps working.
Health records stay on your device under its own settings: we never receive them and never pass them on.

Usage events

The app writes a small local log of its own events (a night started, a screen opened, a purchase completed) into a file next to its database. You can export it yourself: Settings → “Statistics” → “Export the event log”.
The log contains no audio, no text you wrote and no identifiers of you as a person.
With your consent the same events are sent to PostHog, an analytics service hosted in the European Union. They describe how a night went: when it started and ended, how long it lasted, how many gaps the recording had, the battery level at the start and at the end, and the score the app gave that night. City lookup by IP address is disabled and no session recording is made.
Events carry a random identifier of the installation, not of you. There is no account, we do not tie that identifier to a real person and we do not combine it with data from anyone else. It disappears when you delete the app.
If the app crashes, the report goes to Sentry: the error type and the place in the code. Sentry also receives a technical log of a finished night: when it started and ended, the sizes of the recorded chunks, gaps and pauses, and the battery level. Neither the report nor the log carries screenshots, audio or any text you wrote.
Consent is asked on first launch, on the privacy screen, and can be withdrawn at any time: Settings → “Statistics” → “Help improve the app”. Turning it off stops both the statistics and the crash reports; the log stays on your phone.

Subscription

Payment is handled entirely by Apple. We never see your card, your Apple ID or your billing address.
From Apple we learn only whether the subscription is currently active, and that answer stays on the device.

What we do not do

We do not track you across apps or websites, and we ask for no tracking permission.
We use no advertising networks and show no ads.
We do not sell or share personal data. There is nothing to sell: we hold nothing.

Your control over the data

Any night can be deleted inside the app: swipe it in History, or use Delete all recordings in Settings.
Old recordings are also removed automatically - after 60 days, past 30 nights, or above 4 GB, whichever comes first.
Deleting the app removes every recording, the database and the local event log with it.
Microphone access can be revoked at any time in iOS Settings.
The analysis can be exported as tables: the button in the History or Last night header hands the system share sheet two CSV files - nights and episodes. They carry no audio, only dates, durations and episode names.

Sonya is not a medical device. It records and describes sounds; it does not diagnose sleep apnea or any other condition.

Children

Sonya is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Material changes will also be described in the app's release notes.
